Legendary South African football icon Lucas Moripe sadly passed away on November 19th, 2024 at his residence in Atteridgeville located in Pretoria city.
Fondly referred to as the "God of Football" or "Modimo wa Bolo", Moripe gained recognition for his talent displayed on the field throughout the 1970s and 1980s era.
He was a player for teams such as Pretoria Callies and Orlando Pirates gaining admiration and respect from both fans and fellow athletes alike.
Moripe started his journey in 1971 with Pretoria Callies. Was honored as the Player of the Year by the National Professional Soccer League in 1973.
In that year of 1973, he also represented NPSL Invitation XI in a match against British All Stars XI which solidified his standing as one of South Africa's top talents.
Unfortunately though his career faced a setback due to a knee injury towards the end of the 1980s.
In 2010 the Atteridgeville Super Stadium was renamed as the Lucas "Masterpieces" Moripe Stadium to honor his contributions to football history, The stadium with a capacity of 30 000 is where Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United play their home games keeping alive his enduring legacy.
After his passing, he received an outpour of tributes from South African football community
Mamelodi Sundowns extended their sympathies, emphasized Moripe's unwavering presence at their games while praising him as a dedicated supporter and an iconic figure whose legacy will endure for generations to come.
The South African Masters & Legends Football Association and the South African Football Association (SAFA) also expressed their condolences. Acknowledged his role in shaping South African football.
Fans and ex players have expressed their sadness on social media platforms to honor his skills and impact in the game.
Moripe had been using a wheelchair for some time due to a stroke he experienced that was made worse by his knee injury that had been bothering him for years.
At this moment in time the family has not yet shared any information regarding the funeral plans publicly.
